What is Silestone?

Silestone has the look and feel of natural quartz thanks to its dense surfacing material but has a slight advantage over granite. Like quartz, Silestone kitchen worktops do not require sealing. It is widely known for its non-porous structure and durability.

Natural quartz crystals are mixed with raw ingredients such as colour agents, polyester resin, and others to produce this hard-wearing engineered stone. The polyester resin binds and holds the natural quartz crystals together, creating the signature Silestone surface.

Although this surface resembles natural stones like marble and granite, it shines a little brighter thanks to the quartz crystals. Since it is a man-made product, the colour palette, style and finish options and size are wide-ranging and could be customisable depending on the customer’s requirements.

Why are Silestone quartz worktops the good choice for home kitchens?

Non-porous

This is probably the greatest advantage Silestone has over natural stones. Being non-porous, stains, bacteria, mould and viruses cannot penetrate the surface.

Additionally, during the manufacturing process, added to the natural quartz crystals is an antimicrobial protection, which prevents bacterial growth. This makes Silestone the ultimate kitchen surface, safe for you and your family, especially if there are children in your household.

Scratch resistant

Silestone is not only scratch resistant but also scorch resistant. Being composed primarily of quartz, one of the most durable minerals on the planet, this engineered stone is durable, making it difficult to chip or scratch.

High-impact resistance

You’ll no longer fear in damaging your kitchen worktop since Silestone has a high-impact resistance. However, this doesn’t mean that it is indestructible. Over time, eventually, your surface could still be damaged.

Stain resistance

Because of the non-porous surface, you can easily wipe away spills from coffee, lemon juice, wine, olive oil and vinegar without fearing permanent and unsightly beverage and food stains.

Easy to clean

Silestone is easy to clean and maintain. Although it mimics the feel and beauty of natural stones such as marble and granite, it does not require periodic sealing or any special maintenance.

Simple use a soft, non-abrasive cloth and a mild cleaning agent to protect the shiny surface. There’s no need to scrub hard.

However, you need to wipe frequently, especially stains and spills. Make sure heavy objects are not directly dropped on the surface. The falling objects could cause hairline cracks and scratches.

Always use chopping or cutting boards when handling knives. Use trivets when placing hot pans or pots on the worktops since extreme and sudden changes in temperature could still damage your surface.

No radon emissions

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, large quantities of radon emissions could affect the quality of indoor air. Fortunately, Silestone surfaces don’t emit radon gas, unlike granite and other stone surface materials.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Spills. Use only mild household cleaners for Silestone quartz with a polished finish. To remove difficult spills, soak the area for about 10 minutes using mild household cleaner, only. Then, rinse with water and vigorously wipe using a soft cloth. Avoid the use of cleaners containing abrasive because it will dull the polished surface of your kitchen worktop.

Stains. For stains which harden as they dry like gum and food, gently scrape them off the surface. Then, clean the surface with warm water and mild soap.

For grease stains, apply an ample amount of any common household cleaner to the stained area and then rub using a scouring pad until the stain is removed. Immediately rinse with water.

For limescale stain, such as marks left by glasses, sprinkle hydrochloric acid only on the worktop surface and not on any other areas such as the sink or taps. Leave the hydrochloric acid to work for a minute and then rinse with water. Note: Strictly follow manufacturer’s recommended use of hydrochloric acid.

Excessive heat and pressure. Avoid excessive pressure or force that may chip the surface.

Silestone kitchen worktops are resistant to heat. It can withstand moderate temperatures for short periods without any damage. However, certain heat exposure could cause cracks because of thermal shock. So always use trivets when placing hot items directly on the surface. Never use electric skillets or crock pots directly on Silestone surfaces.

Precautions

NEVER place your Silestone surface outdoors or in areas with direct UV lighting. Continuous or long-term exposure to direct UV rays (sunlight) could result in slight discolouration on the surface.

NEVER use sealants or water repellents to bring out the sheen. They only provide artificial short-lived shine on the surface. Never use caustic soda, strippers or any products with a pH of above 10. Dilute solvents or bleach with water when used for cleaning, but never leave them in permanent contact with the product.

To prolong the life of your Silestone kitchen worktop, clean them immediately when there are stains or spills. And avoid harmful chemicals and observe with the above-mentioned precautions.

Conclusion

Silestone quartz worktops work best in contemporary and open plan kitchens. It has the look and feel of natural stone yet can resist stains, scorching and scratches better.
