Worktops are the crowning glory of any kitchen.
The material you opt for, the finish and even the cut, have a huge influence on the overall look and feel of the space.
The biggest impact though?
Colour.
Get this right and your worktop will help to achieve your desired aesthetic and complement the room. Get it wrong, and it can be a disaster.
But with all the colours of the rainbow available, how do you know which one to choose?
Whether you’re redoing the whole kitchen or just replacing surfaces, when it comes to picking the colour of your worktops there are a few things worth considering. Here worktop specialists, the Marble Store, share what they are.
Your first big decision – light or dark?
This is a biggie. Specific colour aside, to filter your choice it’s important to first decide if you want a light or dark work surface.
A big factor in this decision should be the size of your kitchen and how much natural light it gets.
Dark worktops tend to make spaces feel more enclosed, so can become oppressive in small kitchens. Light worktops help to reflect light and create a more bright and airy environment.
It’s all about personal preference though, so don’t panic if you love all things dark but only have a small kitchen. If your heart is set on a dark surface, just opt for a glossy finish to help reflect light. And if you’re revamping the entire kitchen, another great tip is to balance dark worktops with lighter units.
Patterned or plain?
Prefer to keep things simple or keen to have a bit of something going on with your worktop?
A monotone colour can make a powerful design statement and look great. But there are downsides.
Firstly, you’re unlikely to get the option of a solid colour in natural stones such as granite and marble. You’ll also need to get your head around the fact that solid colours are far less forgiving. Dents, burns, even the leftover crumbs from buttering your morning toast, will all be far more evident on a monotone surface.
Worktops that are predominantly one colour but incorporate a subtle fleck – such as Midnight quartz and Artscut Bianco Lux granite – can offer a more forgiving alternative.
If you want to add interest to your worktop, then the vein of marble is a real kitchen favourite. You’ll also find a huge number of patterned quartz and granite surfaces offering everything from multi-coloured flecks and swirls of colour to touches of shimmer and sparkle.
Look down
Ideally, flooring and work surfaces should complement each other. If your flooring has been down for some time, it can be easy to overlook it – but don’t.
Worktop choices and flooring can’t be viewed as separate decisions. They need to be considered together and flatter each other. For example, a wooden worktop with wooden flooring could be in danger of being too ‘samey samey’. The kitchen equivalent of sporting double denim! Likewise, you don’t want a massive colour clash with vibrantly patterned worktops competing with heavily patterned floor tiles.
Our best advice is to choose shades that tone. If you go for a black granite worktop, then how about dark grey kitchen tiles? If that’s playing it too safe, there are loads of ways you can jazz things up. But the point we’re trying to make is to take flooring into consideration. Forget it and regret it!
Think about the surroundings
Ok, so you’ve thought about what colour will work with your flooring but it’s important to think about the rest of the surroundings too.
Cupboard colours, walls and soft furnishings, all help to build your desired look and should work in harmony with each other.
If you’re a lover of patterned wallpaper or jazzy kitchen tiles, then a solid monocolour worktop may be the best option.
If you like to keep everything lowkey, then a muted pale worktop, but with a touch of sparkle, can add an extra dimension to the space.
