How to design a kitchen fit for a queen!

Have plans to entertain over the Jubilee weekend made you reassess your kitchen? Fed up with a drab space that no longer works for you?

If you long to create a kitchen that’s fit for…well…a queen, then you’re in the right place. Our team here at The Marble Store can help.

Kitchen royalty

When it comes to designing a great kitchen, certain elements are more deserving of status than others. Features that should be high up in the pecking order include:

·         Good design

Whether it’s corgis, cats or kids, make your kitchen work for everyone! There are numerous ways you can improve layout – and they don’t always have to mean additional expense.

Something as simple as rearranging where you position your kettle and teacups, or where you slot the microwave, can make all the difference.

Think carefully about how you use the space – what you like and don’t like. And redesign the area based on that. Chances are things will have changed since you first moved in, and children and pets can really influence design choices.

Your family is unique, so your kitchen design should be too.

·         Superior storage

It’s no good spending ages on a fabulous looking kitchen, only to ruin those good looks with clutter. Make sure your plans factor in ample storage – that works!

Pull-out larder cupboards are ideal. There’s also a great range of clever drawer and cupboard storage solutions on the market too. These help you maximise the space you have and keep the contents organised and accessible.

If floor cupboards are bursting and there’s no room for more – look up! Could you use space higher up and add in wall cupboards? Even just an additional shelf can give you a little more flexibility.

·         Appliances

Appliances are the backbone of any busy kitchen – fridges, freezers, ovens, dishwashers – so make sure you pick wisely.

Research is key here. Look for recommendations. ‘Which Best Buys’ can offer valuable insight on market favourites, it’s always worth checking out customer reviews too.

Appliances usually come in standard cupboard dimensions but if you’re working with less space be sure to look around, as slimline versions are often available.

If you’ve got grand plans (but your budget doesn’t quite match up!), remember to think long term with your kitchen equipment, looking for appliances that have good energy ratings. This will help you to do your bit for the planet and save you money in the long run.

·         Quality fittings

You don’t want a kitchen that’s all style and no substance. As one of the busiest rooms in the house, kitchens need to be able to take the pressure.

Even if you’re not much of a chef, we’ll bet the kitchen is the social hub of your home, and fixtures and fittings need to be able to stand the test of time.

Invest in quality cupboard doors and strong cabinets. And if you’re going for handles, make sure they’re hardwearing too.

·         Flooring

It’s unlikely you’ll be getting the red carpet out every time a guest arrives, but flooring is definitely important and certainly worth proper consideration.

Your choice can have a real impact on the overall appearance and feel of the room. It needs to look good, but practicality is important too. The kitchen is a heavy traffic area and is going to encounter spills – so being stain resistant, easy to clean and non-slip are essential qualities.

Also take into account the effect of your flooring on the rest of your chosen colour scheme and the lighting levels in the room. A dark floor won’t show marks, but it will make the area feel darker and more enclosed.

The crowning glory

There’s no mistaking it. Yes, design is important. Yes, storage and colour schemes matter, but the jewel in the crown of any kitchen?

The worktops.

Capable of dressing up even the most tired and dated of kitchens, the right work surface choice can make or break a kitchen. Transforming ordinary to extraordinary.

Typically seen as the hallmark of a quality kitchen, solid stone surfaces such as granite and marble have long been regarded as the pinnacle of kitchen excellence. These days quartz worktops join them as another worthy contender – and with a huge range of colours and finishes available, is a surface definitely worth checking out.
