A lot of people are doubtful about getting Granite worktops, since they hear that they are more difficult to maintain than Quartz worktops or other worktop options.
This may be true in some aspect, but is not always the case. Granite Worktops are more absorbent than Quartz worktops, but not all Granite were formed equally.
In order to know if your Granite worktops need to be sealed, execute this simple water test to see for yourself:
1. Pour about 1/4 cup of water on the work surface.
2. Note the time when you placed the water on the work surface, and wait to see how long it takes for the water to absorb (the granite will grow dark)
3. Use this chart to determine how often you should need to reseal your Granite worktop:
• Fast absorption: Reseal a couple layers of sealer once a year and be sure to wipe the spills immediately after they occur
• 4-5 minutes: Several layers of sealer are needed, but only perform this procedure every 3-5 years. Perform this water test again before reapplying
• 10 minutes: Put only a single layer of the sealer. It may be many years before reapplication is needed
• 30 minutes (or doesn’t entirely absorb): No need to reseal your worktop!
